Food Friday: …Or Maybe They’re Fishy in Sweden

The food: Swedish Fish licorice

Where to find it: Any random 7-Eleven in Stockholm, Sweden – they’re everywhere.

-:-

I might have said last week that Norway’s clean-smelling fish strike me as odd, but it’s entirely different than the funkiness of Swedish Fish licorice. No, this ain’t the kind they sell in the US. It’s the real deal. Just like the fish in Scandinavia, the licorice here is cleaner and simpler than its American equivalent. But that only intensifies its robustness. With a stiff, salty kick, Swedish licorice bites like hell. The Swedes and Scandinavians go nuts for licorice. They must have built up some kind of tolerance to the attack licorice punches upon the human taste buds. As for this wimpy, American kid, I’ll stick with Fenton’s Ice Cream for my sweet cravings.

Maybe that’s the reason why Scandinavians can drink so damn much, as well.
